Zhu Dequn (Chu Teh-chun) (b.1920) I) Untitled 1 Ii) Untitled 2 ink on paper, set of two i) 10 x 11 cm. ii) 13 x 11 cm. (4 x 4 3/8 in. 5 1/8 x 4 3/8 in.) FURTHER DESCRIPTION These are two rare elegant pieces by the Chinese master of abstract art Chu Teh-chun; they exhibit the rhythm of lines on one hand and the charm of ink blots on the other, the result is two clean, crisp and delicate works of art. Untitled 1 may appear to be the result of a casual and carefree flick of the paintbrush, but the line suggests the use of an upright brush technique; the line is fine yet firm, and is in fact one continuous line. The two pieces precisely demonstrate the dot, the line and the plane as elements of spatial composition, creating an interesting blend and contrast of the interpretation and essence of Chinese and Western art. Even at a scale as small as these two pieces, extraordinary skills can be seen in the white space between the ink and the way the contrasting components complement each other.
