Cut, Carat Weight, Clarity and Colour belong to the 4Cs of diamond quality
grading. They are crucial factors in assessing a diamond. The cut grading
system does not only limit to the shape of a diamond, it also evaluates the
polish (the condition of diamond’s finish) and symmetry (balance, proportion
and precision of facets) of a diamond. The grading measures how well the
brightness, fire and scintillation of the faceted stone are. Cut is the most
important factor to determine the overall beauty of a diamond. With poor
polish, the surface of a facet can be dulled for a stone of high colour and clarity
grade. Whereas the brilliance of a lower colour and clarity grade diamond can
be intensified by precise cut to deliver the most desirable return of light.
The precision of cut gives a new life to a diamond. The artistry takes into
account the hardness and quality of the diamond rough, so it requires
precise workmanship and experience to fashion a stone. Every facet must
be considered in calculation of light paths and the distribution of inclusion
to deliver a balance between its final beauty and weight, thus releasing the
brilliance of the gem.
