Some precious gems exhibit a star-like or cat’s-eye phenomenon known as asterism or cat’s-eye effect, caused by reflections from tiny, needle-like inclusions that are oriented in several specific directions. The finest gems of this type are semi-transparent, of distinct star or cat’s-eye which is centred on the top of the stone and visible from a reasonable distance under luminescent light. Asterism or cat’s-eye mostly appears in white, it is rare and valuable if the effect presents the same colour as the body colour of the stone.
Phenomenal gems can only be found in small percentages of gem productions in the market. As faceted gems typically sell for more per carat than fashioned as a cabochon, only those of exceptional body colour and outstanding quality of such are left untreated and sold as treasures.
