The simulated stonework case housing an enamel dial striking movement with outside count wheel and silk suspension, surmounted by two laurel wreaths, flanked by a finely chased and patinated figure of Homer playing a lyre, with a seated dog at his feet, the marble base on paw feet inset with an ormolu plaque depicting an Homeric scene, the clock measuring approximately 53.5 x 39.8 x 18.9mm, dial signed Ledure, Bronzier à Pais and Hémon Hr. bell, circa 1815
Pierre-Victor Ledure
Pierre-Victor Ledure (1783-1840) was a renowned skillful bronzier in the early 19th Century. During
the zenith of Napoleonic Empire, gilt-bronze, patinated and ormolu techniques were vastly
used in making mantel clocks. Most were embellished with high ideals allegories, gods and
goddesses or historical patronages. Examplars of Ledure’s work are in the Palais Vienna in Madrid as well as the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, England and the British Embassy in Paris.
