Sierra Leone, an important mine region in West Africa, is abundant in precious metals and stones, including diamonds, gold, rutile and bauxite. Particularly prolific is its diamond output, where large, premium-grade white diamonds and vivid yellow diamonds are commonly found among the deposits. For this reason, Sierra Leone has been called “The Kingdom of Diamonds.”
The world’s most captivating coloured and yellow diamonds are harvested from the Zimi mine in Sierra Leone. The yellow diamonds mined possess a deep, warm and intense yellow colour with a touch of orange hue. This makes the entire stone sparkles with a vivid yellow like the colour of Jonquil.
Zimi yellow diamonds are higher in clarity but they usually contain black pinpoint inclusions. The rough of these stones also have a very unique characteristic; they possess a naturally drilled hole that can reach into the heart of the stone. During the polishing process, the rough stones are subject to a huge amount of wastage. This is why Zimi yellow diamonds of more than 5 carats are incredibly rare and precious, making them highly sought-after by Jewellery connoisseurs.
