OLD MINE-CUT DIAMOND

The history of diamond cuts can be traced back to the late Middle Ages, when point cut, which involved a simple polishing of the octahedral crystal faces to create even and unblemished facets, was born. Afterwards, table cut and rose cut emerged in the mid-to-late 1400s and early sixteenth century successively.

From late seventeenth century, a new cutting style came into existence. Named after the origin of the diamonds at that time, the brand new old mine-cut was soon in great favour in that era as it featured in many Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian style engagement rings. Old mine-cut is characterised by a high crown, small table, rectangular girdle, deep pavilion and large culet. Of fifty-eight facets, it is the predecessor of the modern brilliant cut, which has the same amount of facets.

Like all other antique diamonds, old mine-cut diamonds differ from modern ones in appearance as artisans at that time shaped each diamond without the advantage of motorised machinery but by hand. Due to the handcraftsmanship, every single old mine-cut diamond is unique, thus making the craze from sophisticated people increase with time. Natalie Portman and Ashley Simpson are celebrity brides who have chosen the old mine-cut diamonds for their special engagement rings.

Tiancheng International is pleased to offer a pair of old mine-cut diamond earrings (Lot 261) this season. Each diamond has a distinct beauty as the bygone era in which they were fashioned, which is always a favourite of discerning collectors of vintage jewellery.
