Brilliant-cut Diamonds

The history of diamond cuts can be traced to the 14-15th century and the first advancement involved a simple polishing of the natural octahedral crystal faces to achieve even and unblemished facets. The first brilliant cuts with 17 facets dated back in the 17th century, evolving to 58 facets nowadays. More than 500 years of experimentation led to the introduction of the modern brilliant cut in the early 1900s.

Optimising the number of facets will encourage reflection of lights and will significantly increase the fire and brilliance of the gem; thus, every facet must be considered in calculation of light paths. However, the choice of diamond cut is often decided by the original shape and quality of the rough stone, sometimes the cutters compromise and accept lesser proportions and symmetry in order to avoid inclusions or to preserve carat weight. If a diamond is too deep, the carat weight will increase but result in a loss of brilliance due to light leakage.

With poor polish, the surface of a facet can be dulled creating blurred or dulled sparkle, and having poor cut and symmetry can lead to light leakage, losing the brilliance and fire.
