The Auspicious Goats
The origin of Chinese traditional culture has been closely associated with goats. Ancient legend has it that the mythological emperors Fu Xi Shi and Shen Nong Shi used the goat symbol as their tribal totems. The goat is one of the twelve zodiac animals. Sporting an endearing, docile image, the creature is deemed by the Chinese people as an embodiment of goodwill and auspiciousness. Eulogies of the goat as a symbol of “perfection” and “auspiciousness” are abundant in Chinese folk sayings.
According to the Chinese lunar calendar system, 2015 is the Year of the Goat, which is also the “Year of the Golden Goat”, providing interesting inspiration to the folk culture and art circles. In Spring Auction 2015, Tiancheng International will present a Natural White Jade ‘Auspicious Goat’ Pendent Necklace (Lot 157) to all connoisseurs. Frontally, the jewellery piece looks like a ruyi, but sideways, it bears lifelike resemblance to a goat, making it a perfect item for one’s collection in the Golden Goat Year.
