Wang Kai – Translating visions of art to a carving
Wang Kai, a Chinese jade carving master and one of the leading proponents of the ‘Hai’ school, has pioneered a new artistic style by combining Chinese painting and calligraphy with jade carving. Adept at translating his artistic visions into a painting first, then onto a carving, he places equal emphasis on the graphic beauty of the traditional Chinese visual arts as well as on the humanitarian aspect of jade craftsmanship, where the inherent essence of jadeite is accented. Equipped with a mastery of calligraphy, traditional Chinese paintings and seal carving from his childhood years, he practises the yin carving style, as though wielding a painting brush, to form unique, vivid images of lotuses, jade plaques and seals of his signature style.

Far from mundane, Wang Kai’s works project a strong visual sense and multilayered richness to complement his fine, delicate carving skills, in presenting a fresh face of Chinese culture.

Offered in this auction is a masterpiece by Wang Kai which is honoured the silver prize of China Fine Craft Award. Based on a delicately conceived artistic vision, the white jade and hardstone ornament (Lot 196) is filled with auspicious blessings.
