Certain agricultural produce are given auspicious meanings as part of a custom prevailing in traditional Chinese society. Peapod is clearly one example, which means “abundant offspring and blessings” or “plentiful harvest.” Such a crop is associated with the idiom dou kou nian hua, literally translated as “the nutmeg years’ but refers to the fresh beauty of teenage girls in their maidenhood, with their anticipations and hopes for the future.
