Lu Chuntao (b.1965) Lotus Pond 2012 No.042 ink and colour on paper executed in 2012 50 x 50 cm. (20 x 20 in.) FURTHER DESCRIPTION As an artist born in Shanghai in the 1960’s, Lu Chuntao inevitably found his artwork caught in the intersection of two currents that had transpired since the 1980’s – the surging rise of modernism and the century-old “Shanghai school of art”. In terms of artistic language, he borrows from a broad range of ancient and modern methods, often seeming to transport his narrative across time and space as a form of multi-dimensional medium, effectively expanding the spatial dimension of ink painting. He uses colours in place of ink, and lets the palette guide the composition, creating his own brand of style and form. - Excerpted from the preface of Lu Chuntao Solo Exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Singapore, 10 March, 2013
