Ding Xiongquan (Walasse Ting) (1928 - 2010) Cats ink and acrylic on paper executed circa 1980s 54 x 76 cm. (21 1/4 x 30 in.) FURTHER DESCRIPTION From abstract expressionism in the early 1950’s to the romantic and colourful style in the 1970’s, Walasse Ting’s artistic creations were centred around women, animals and plants. Through the use of oil paint, canvas, acrylic paint, ink and rice paper, he expressed himself with ease in bright tones. He travelled to France in his earlier years, and was later active in New York’s art scene; his creative attitude and style are more similar to the carefree and sincere style usually associated with Parisian painters. The women depicted in his works always appear charmingly lazy in a sultry position; his flowers are always brilliant and animals lively. Between the rugged composition and delicate brushstrokes, his subjects radiate a sense of French elegance and charm, giving the artist the nickname “Flower Thief”.
