Yu Shui (b. 1955) Chinese Opera Figures ink and colour on paper 35 x 50 cm. (13 3/4 x 19 5/8 in.) FURTHER DESCRIPTION Hailed as one of the representatives of Chinese New Literati Painting, Yu Shui was active in China’s art scene in the 1990’s. His works are often rich with multi-level layouts, colours are mainly those that capture the magnificence of greenery and landscape but without the overpowering richness. The ink is soft and light, while the lines flow as if incidental, his works exude a sense of leisure. And drawing on the traditions of the literati, his subjects, whether they be figures, trees or architecture, are usually distorted to some degree. Yu pays special attention to the structural compositions, thereby adding a contemporary charm to a classic form of art.
