Zhu Jianzhong (b. 1954) Chanting Natural ink and colour on paper executed in 1993 32.5 x 107 cm. (12 3/4 x 42 1/8 in.) FURTHER DESCRIPTION Zhu Jianzhong’s ink paintings often depict clouds in the wind, with large areas of rendering that seem to suggest randomness in brushstrokes. The truth is, this is the artist’s controlled method of expression, so as to keep objects like rocks and trees partially hidden; the landscape depicted is as much in the artist’s heart as it is in our imagination. Zhu uses dark shades of ink, and sometimes large areas of green, to create his version of “white space”, the result is stunning visual effects that have become his personal style, like standing in the mist would suggest the desire to breathe in the fresh air, but with a hint of mystery as to what lies behind the fog.
