FURTHER DESCRIPTION “From the mid 1980’s to the 1990’s, Yang Jiechang completed a series of works called Thousand Layers of Ink. The pieces are formed by overlapping layers of ink, resulting in abstract and thick formations of ink deposits. The images in Thousand Layers of Ink not only showcase the product of time and the contraction of ink from wet to dry, but also highlights the brightness of ink. Yang Jiechang’s study of the characteristics of ink also reveals his emotional attachment to the medium, as well as his deeply rooted connection with this tradition.” - Extracted from an essay written by Taiwanese art critic Wang Chiaji in Form, Idea, Essence, Rhythm: New Aspects of Contemporary East Asian Ink Painting, Zhang Zhiwei, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, 2009, p1-2.
