A piece typically takes place over the course of an entire year, using ritualistic behaviour to delve into life’s deeper meanings. All five of his most important pieces (the One Year Performance Series) use self-imprisonment as a means of achieving a breakthrough from space, time and relationships. Through his work he has summarised life as follows: “Life is a prison sentence”, “Life is a passing of time”, “Life is free thinking”; through these existential speculations, he has directly touched the core issues around the existence of life. In Taiwan, Xie Deqing’s works are certainly one-of-a-kind; on the international art scene, he is also a force to be reckoned with in the realm of behavioural art.
