PROVENANCE The present owner acquired this painting directly from the artist Wu Guanzhong is regarded as one of the most representative modern Chinese artists in the 20th century. Traditional Chinese painterly techniques of brush drawing are often found in Wu’s oil paintings. One may find detailed use of brush, be they lines or dots, creating works using western medium with Chinese painterly techniques. This work is a rare double-sided oil painting on board. One side depicts of the scene of willows by the lake in spring. Painted plein air, the lake, willows, people in the composition were painted vividly by fast strokes, displaying the artist’s immediate emotions into the work. Wu demonstrates how he has mastered his brushes by the succinct lines he uses to paint his subjects.
